The Earth Mover had cut so deep below ground I managed to access a broken sewer pipe and enter an old air-raid shelter. Crawlers had entered through the same opening years ago, and infected a small family taking refuge. Carriers couldn't reach the bodies, so they were left there to decompose and simmer in their own juices. A faded picture in a broken frame put faces on the victims... five happy farmers. Ma, Pa, two brothers, and a sister who ran to safety as the local Klaxon started screaming. Little did they know the threat wasn't coming from above, via Russian bombers, but was instead coming through the little nooks and crannies of their small shelter -- that would soon become their tomb.
