The United European Defense (UED) was created around the same time as the ETO (European Trade Organization) was formed after the Great War, as both organizations' purpose was to establish European cooperation and usher a era of lasting peace in order to prevent similar devastating conflicts to that of the Great War. The UED serves as a security component of the ETO.

The UED consisted of every country in Europe except the Russian Empire. The UED created a branch called the MDC (Military Defense Commission) in 1939 and is responsible for advanced weapons such as sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and Hailstorm weapons. The chief figurehead of the MDC was Dr. Albert Einstein, whose presence on the MDC work team encouraged other European scientists to stay in Europe rather than go over to America. Concerned of isolationist Russia, the UED had originally planned a military contingency should Russia ever tried to invade Europe; but this proved useless with the appearance of the Chimera. Though all the countries of Europe united together to try and repel the Chimeran invaders, it took the Chimera little more than two months to conquer mainland Europe (December 1949-February 1950). This was partly due to the flawless coordination of the Chimera, their ability to roll over certain static defense positions and the extreme psychological affect the appearance and actions of the Chimera had on the UED soldiers. This was especially seen during the siege of Genoa, Italy, where soldiers reported them as being unstoppable and several hundred killed themselves rather than fight the 'unholy' Chimera.

Remnant of the UED existed through to a radical splinter group of the UED known as the Maquis, a large resistance group composed of many nationalities. In Resistance: Retribution they helped the British Army to liberate mainland Europe from the Chimera, and are attempting to gather information on the Cloven.
