Protection Camp (level)

Protection camps were a network of United States government-sponsored refugee camps for displaced American refugees that were affected by the Chimeran War. The camps were an alternative for refugees who were not accepted to the Liberty Defense Perimeter, in which these camps were commonly situated outside or near the borders of the LDP. The camps were overseen by the Liberty Defense Project Administration and were originally made in preparation for the events transpiring in Europe.[1]

Overview[]

During the event of an attack or evacuation, civilians were directed to the nearest designated extraction point. Evacuees were required to be registered with an ID card to be accepted in a protection camp.[2] The evacuees were then transported to the nearest Protection Camp, where they were arranged to a temporary home and provided meal preps, sanitation, medical care, and security.[1]

Unknown to the public, however, the services provided by the camps were far from the truth. Prior to the Chimera's attack on America in August 1951, the government did not have sufficient time nor resources to build protection camps for the entire American population, and thus only having the existing camps severely overcrowded. This consequently weakens basic services provided in the camps and therefore inevitably raises civil unrest.[3] The Liberty Defense Project Administration could only address the problem by controlling the population and neutralizing civil disobedience before it can begin. To this end, families were deliberately separated in order to increase reliance on centralized services. Furthermore, as a last resort, guard towers were set up with machine guns that were aimed directly inside the compound should it become necessary.[3]

Due to the aforementioned problems, some refugees refused to live in the camps and took their chances by settling into shantytowns. Though many others still decide to live in the camps out of pure necessity.[4] By July 24, 1952, then President Harvey McCullen commissioned emergency construction of an additional 50 protection camps within the LDP to support the number of Americans who were unable to evacuate to the LDP.[5]
