The Leviathan was a Chimera that appeared in Resistance 2.
Described as the single-largest creature to have ever walked the earth, this bipedal Chimera was 300 feet tall. It had a large cooling device on its back, which could be seen while it rampaged through Chicago during the single player campaign of Resistance 2.

Only two Leviathan were ever reported, and the origins of the strains are unknown, as SPRA had no knowledge of it at the time of its sighting. The only Leviathan encountered (in gameplay) is in the Chicago mission. The second was described and photographed in intelligence reports found on SRPANET which could possibly be an early strain of it, from the French resistance. It is assumed that thousands of bodies would have been necessary to create it. Prior to the Leviathan sighting in Chicago, Specter Team reported that the Chimera were constructing a 300-foot-tall enclosure surrounding Wrigley Field, which is subjectively possible that this may have been the birth place of the Leviathan. SRPA had decided to ignore the report since Specter Team had just decimated the Chimera command structure in Chicago during Operation: Shadow Strike.

Nathan Hale encountered the Leviathan in Chicago and was picked up and literally thrown around the city by it. He used a LAARK against it, firing rockets at its face and mouth when picked up by it.
Hale, after being thrown across Chicago by the Leviathan, maneuvered through buildings and fought a number Hybrids before luring the Leviathan under a sky-bridge. A demolition team attempted to detonate charges laid inside the bridge to blow it up, but the charges failed to ignite. Hale fired a missile at the bridge when the Leviathan was under it, and the subsequent explosion blew off a portion of its face, exposing its skull. Hale fired one more rocket into the skull, thus eliminating the Leviathan.

- The Leviathan is named after a Biblical sea creature of gigantic proportions [1].
- The Leviathan makes a sound not unlike Godzilla, from the film with the same name.
- Most of the fight sequence against the Leviathan was shown in the E3 2008 gameplay video.
- In the novel Resistance: The Gathering Storm, as Hale is hiding in his childhood shelter (on his journey to the ranch he used to live on), he feels the earth tremble beneath some kind of Chimeran horror, and speculates that it could be a Leviathan, among other things. Seeing as how SRPA had no knowledge of Leviathans at this period in time, it would seem that this is a very minor continuity error made by the author.
