Chicxulub Crater
From the Resistance Wiki
The Chicxulub Crater in Mexico was a massive crater believed to have been created roughly 65 million years ago by an meteorite impact. The crater itself is 180 kilometers in diameter.
Following the fall of the Liberty Defense Perimeter; Daedalus led the Chimeran Fleet to the Chicxulub Crater to begin the final phase of the Chimera's plan; excavating, building and repairing the Chimeran tower at the center of the crater. The tower itself was only partially-uncovered, but was described as being 4 times the size of the hub tower located in Chicago, and is the central hub for the entire global tower network. With the fleet constantly assembling over the crater, a massive army of Chimera was deployed to uncover the tower.
Desperate to stop the activation of the Chicxulub Tower, SRPA initiated Operation Black Eden to destroy the fleet with a prototype fission bomb (dubbed Nellie) on the fleet's flagship, and by extension kill Daedalus. The mission succeeded, with Daedalus being personally killed by Nathan Hale, and the bomb detonated, destroying the fleet. The latter action, however, apparently caused the Chicxulub Tower to activate, and thus a spatial-distortion field was created, encompassing the entire globe, and literally teleported the Earth to another location in space.
[edit] Trivia
- In real life, the Chicxulub Crater was actually discovered in 1978 by geophysicist Glen Penfield during a scout for potential oil drilling locations while working for the Pemex oil company.
- The Chicxulub crater is widely believed to be the impact site of the comet responsible for the K-T extinction event, which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and over 75% of life on Earth.
