Carty was a Freedom First fighter and recruit who was stationed in the Freedom First camp near Custer, Montana. Previously in his life, Carty was a former librarian. He was considered to be the slowest to get changed and so was put on "rock duty" by his instructor Anthony Puzo before being put on the obstacle course. Carty's punishment was a way to toughen his military and survival training in contrast to the other experienced recruits. Ironically though, Carty's laboring training is very beneficial for his future role in combat than the other recruits.
