The British Armed Forces, also known as His Majesty's Armed Forces, were the military services responsible for the defense of the United Kingdom, its overseas territories and Crown dependencies. During the later phase of the Chimeran War, the British Army was the only standing European military left resisting against the Chimera, with all the other European military forces having either been destroyed or forced underground.

History[]

Stalker

Following the end of the Great War, Britain joined the European Trade Organization and established closer relations with other European nations, while the British Armed Forces became part of the ETO's United European Defence. However, after decades of preparation for a conventional war with Imperial Russia, the sudden Chimeran invasion of mainland Europe shocked the community, and any good relations that they previously shared deteriorated rapidly as nations seized each other's equipment and arms, desperately hoping to halt the seemingly unstoppable Chimeran invasion and safeguard their territories and populations.

British forces were especially targeted in this manner as remnants of the UED felt betrayed by the British diversion of manpower and resources to Avalon One in Australia. Notably, after aid was diverted, the UED expelled British forces from Europe and seized the 100 Royal Air Force P-1117 Kingfishers participating in the fighting in Europe, only eight of which were recovered later by the British. In reality, over 60 had survived, and UED forces had secretly murdered the crews in order to keep the aircraft for their own use.[1] Another notable incident involved crates of Chimeran metal alloy being seized. The material, identical to the metal used in Chimeran dropship armor, had been recovered by RAF Transport Command in Gibraltar and was intended to be sent to Dover to be used on surviving VTOLs as improvised armor plating. Maquis forces stole the shipment and kept it for themselves. With the destruction of much of the Royal Air Force, no one was left alive to report the theft.[2]

Chimeran War[]

Due to Chimera's swift conquest of mainland Europe, the British were forewarned of the threat and were able to prepare for the Chimera's inevitable invasion of the British Isles. British troops were deployed throughout the country, with most being posted to different outposts throughout the British Isles. There were at least four bases, including Central Command in London, Northern Command in Cheshire, Southern Command in Bristol and Eastern Command in Norwich. The British Intelligence Corps based at Northern Command began to accumulate all they knew about the Chimera's capabilities and the decisive defeats they had inflicted upon Europe, in order to plan a successful defence of Great Britain. But, much of what they knew was deliberately kept from the public and armed forces.[3]

In October 1950, the Chimera launched a full-scale assault on southern England, tunnelling under the English Channel to avoid interception by the Royal Navy or interdiction from the Royal Air Force. Despite extensive preparation by the British Army, their sudden emergence across the country and the attacks on industrial and population centres, meant that much of the country fell within a matter of days. Central Command in London, which contained 14,000 personnel, was wiped out by October 10, and was quickly followed up by the destruction of Eastern Command in Norwich, which held a further 20,000. Within the first three months, with losses closing on 100,000, and unable to hold major cities, British forces quickly retreated to other scattered military bases, but continued to wage a costly guerilla war against the Chimera. It was also during the occupation that the Intelligence Corps discovered the nature of the Angels, and through unknown means, were able to successfully capture one, offering it in exchange with the United States for military support.

Operation Morning Star[]

By July 1951, with British forces having been significantly depleted, the British and Americans were finally able to strike a deal. Both sides agreed to meet in York on July 11, 1951, chosen for its extremely low Chimeran presence. On their way to the rendezvous, the British convoy was ambushed in Manchester where much of the original convoy's escort were captured alive and sent to Grimsby for conversion. Amongst those captured was the head of the British resistance, Rachel Parker. As a result of this failure, the British were unable to warn the American forces approaching York of the true nature of the Chimera, leaving them unprepared for a battle against a totally alien foe. Thanks to the efforts of the Cloven, significant Chimeran forces were also drawn to York. As a result, the American resupply mission, Operation Deliverance, ended in disaster and all 12,000 troops committed to the operation were wiped out in a matter of hours.[4]

Concurrently, a desperate rescue attempt was launched under Captain Mitchell to recover the stranded convoy in Manchester. Outnumbered and outgunned, Mitchell's recovery team fought a losing battle for most of the morning to prevent the Chimera from retrieving the Angel, while they waited for reinforcements. Equally desperate to recover the Angel, the Chimera deployed Stalkers which deterred further aerial reinforcements from arriving in Manchester. Shortly after the unexpected rescue of Captain Parker by American soldier Sergeant Nathan Hale in Grimsby, Hale reinforced Mitchell's forces and turned the tide against the Chimera, allowing the British to recover the Angel and transport it to Northern Command for containment.

British Intelligence noted an increase in Chimeran activity in Nottingham, and subsequently discovered excavation work being undertaken by the Chimera, linking the tunnels there with the wider network. Seizing the opportunity to strike at the Chimera, the British launched Operation Shear under Lieutenant Stephen Cartwright in a risky offensive to seal off this new tunnel nexus. The operation was ultimately a success for the resistance but, while British troops were pre-occupied with Operation Shear, the Chimera launched an attack on Northern Command to once again liberate the Angel. Fortunately Nathan Hale prevented the Chimera from freeing the Angel and though it tried to overtake him, he succeeded in killing it.[3]

British forces retreated from Northern Command to Southern Command, but it too soon came under Chimeran attack. The British managed to fend off the attack with the assistance of Cartwright and Hale before retreating once again to Cardiff.

With their backs to the wall and no further options for retreat, British forces under Parker, working on Intelligence gathered by Hale and Cartwright, launched a joint offensive with American forces into London to destroy the Chimeran hub tower. During the subsequent Battle of London, British and American forces fought desperately against the Chimeran defenders until Hale infiltrated the tower and destroyed its reactor core, causing it to explode and destroying the entire tower network in Britain along with the Angels who inhabited them. Without the Angels, all Chimera on British soil began to die off en mass and Britain was liberated from the Chimera.[5]

Operation Overstrike[]

Following the end of the Chimeran occupation, England was secured and served as a jumping-off point for an counter-invasion of Western Europe. The defeat of the Chimera in England led to the Maquis sending a representative to request British military assistance in the destruction of the Western European tower network. Once they had regathered their forces, the British readily agreed to their request.

The British dispatched two squadrons to serve as reinforcements to the Maquis. Launching from Dover, the First and Second Squadrons were led by Major Stephen Cartwright and Colonel Rachel Parker, respectively. The initial plan was to land in Rotterdam before quickly carving a path straight to the Maquis stronghold of Luxembourg. Unfortunately, due to outnof date Maquis intelligence, the First Squadron was attacked by three massive Chimeran anti-aircraft guns. Despite sustaining heavy losses, the efforts of Maquis mercenary James Grayson ensured that Second Squadron received a much smoother arrival into Rotterdam.[6] Shortly after, both Squadrons set up camp in the outskirts of Rotterdam before hastily drawing up their next move; Major Cartwright led a task force south to intercept Chimeran Earth Movers that were heading towards Luxembourg. Colonel Parker took the remainder of Second Squadron to Luxembourg to coordinate with the Maquis for their assault on Paris.[7]

Cartwright's team destroyed two out of three Earth Movers, but sustained severe losses, rendering them unable to stop the third Earth-mover. As reinforcements would not arrive in time, Cartwright was only able to gain the aid of Grayson, who used a Chimeran Hammer to through the Chimeran-infested trenches and successfully destroyed the Earth Mover, mere minutes before it would have arrived at the Maquis fortress.[8] Despite stopping the Earth Movers, the Chimera were alerted to the Maquis presence in Luxembourg and launched a full-scale assault on the stronghold. British and Maquis forces mounted a desperate defense as they evacuate as many personnel as possible to the last safe zone in Reims.[9]

Despite the loss of men, the British and Maquis carried out their final assault on the Paris tower. Cartwright led a frontal assault on the Paris defenses and the tower while the Maquis carried out their plans in smuggling a serum into the Chrysalis Lair in order to eradicate the Carrier strain and grounding the Chimeran conversion process to a halt.[10] Beginning on September 6, 1951, Cartwright launched the assault on Paris and succeeded in breaking through the outer defenses. This allowed the Chimera to divert their attention on Cartwright's forces and reducing their defenses at the Chrysalis Lair. Ultimately, the British succeeded in destroying the tower and thereby the tower network throughout Western Europe as the Chimera became unorganized and soon dying without the Angels. The Maquis accomplished their mission in eradicating the Carriers and temporarily halting the Chimera's conversion centers.[11]

Post-Operation Overstrike[]

In late 1952, with aid from the Maquis, British military forces launched further offenses into Central and Eastern Europe. As all British forces were redeployed to Europe, the British Isles were left vulnerable to covert Chimeran attacks. The Chimera launched incursions into Axbridge and Bracknell, and forcing Colonel Parker to request SRPA aid in the form of Specter Team, who managed to neutralize and contain the Chimera in England.

By mid-late 1953, British and Maquis forces were near the collapsed Red Curtain, and began making plans to enter Russia.[12] However, the sudden collapse of the United States following the fall of the Liberty Defense Perimeter and the aftermath of Operation Black Eden forced British forces to retreat back to England. By 1957, the British military were pushed back to Wales and once more reduced to waging a guerilla war.[13]

Recruitment posters[]

Many recruitment posters and hand-painted recruitment signs can be seen during the campaign of Resistance: Fall of Man. This indicates that the British Army were in need of new recruits in the wake of the Chimeran invasion. Many of these advertisments are based on real-life recruitment posters that were used during World War I and World War II.
